The Apostolic Fathers In Asia Minor
Ignatius of Antioch, the bishop of Antioch, was taken to Rome in 110 to be martyred. He wrote letters to five churches while passing through the province of Asia—to Ephesus, Magnesia on the Meander, Tralles, Philadelphia, and Smyrna. He also wrote a letter to Polycarp, who was a disciple of the apostle John. Polycarp later was burned at the stake in Smyrna in 155. The account of his martyrdom was recorded and sent to the church in Philomelium. Papias, another disciple of John, served as the bishop of Hierapolis. Polycrates, the bishop of Ephesus, described how Philip the Apostle lived in Hierapolis with his daughters. He also stated that the apostle John was buried at Ephesus.
